I'm a numbers guy. When somebody tells me social media 'works,' my first question is: how do you know? So I dug into the actual research from places like Toast, Deloitte, the National Restaurant Association, and Sprout Social. Here's what the 2026 data says about restaurant social media — and what it means for your place.
Social media is now a discovery engine, not just a billboard
Toast's 2026 discovery report surveyed nearly 1,500 U.S. adults and found that TikTok alone drives 38% of restaurant discovery among Gen Z — the single biggest channel for the youngest spending generation. Overall, 67% of Gen Z and 57% of Millennials rely on social platforms when deciding where to eat. If your restaurant isn't showing up in their feed, you're invisible at the exact moment they're choosing dinner.
TikTok and Instagram lead engagement
Socialinsider's 2026 benchmark report analyzed over 70 million posts and found TikTok's average engagement rate climbed to 3.70%, up 49% year over year. Instagram Reels post around a 2.7% engagement rate — nearly double static posts. Food and beverage is one of the top-performing industries on both platforms, which means the bar for 'good' content is achievable for a real restaurant, not just a brand with a studio.
Facebook still matters for local discovery
Don't write off Facebook. TouchBistro's 2025 Diner Trends Report found that 45% of diners check a restaurant's Facebook business profile before visiting, and 73% of restaurateurs still use it to promote their business. For community events, trivia nights, and local families, Facebook remains the local-discovery workhorse — especially here in The Shoals.
Social-first restaurants grow faster
Deloitte's 2025 State of Social research found that restaurants reported an average 9.9% increase in consumer revenue directly from social media strategies. But the brands with the strongest social strategies — what Deloitte calls 'social-first' brands — saw an even bigger 14.1% revenue increase. The gap between posting and posting strategically is real money.
Reviews and social are now blended
Roughly nine in ten consumers read reviews before choosing a restaurant, and a large share won't consider a place below four stars. But reviews and social content are blending — 55% of Gen Z diners now use Instagram for restaurant reviews, and 44% turn to TikTok. Your social posts and your reviews are the same discovery path now.
What it means for your restaurant
The data points one direction: show up consistently on the platforms your guests already use, lead with video and food, keep your Google Business Profile and Facebook current, and treat reviews as part of your social strategy. You don't need a big budget — you need consistency and a real point of view. I help restaurants turn these numbers into a plan that fills seats, backed by View 360 Marketing. Look, you've read this far — so let's skip the small talk.
If any of this hit a little too close to home, that's a sign it's time to do something about it. We're local, we've run restaurants, and I'd love to help you sort yours out — no jargon, no pressure, just an honest read from somebody who's been behind the line.
