Payment processing is the set-it-and-forget-it part of running a restaurant — until it quietly bleeds you for more than it should. I've looked at a lot of statements over the years, and the warning signs are usually the same. Here are five that tell me it's time to take a closer look.
1. Your effective rate keeps climbing
If your total fees as a percentage of sales are rising without a change in your sales mix, something's off. It could be a shift in card types, or it could be added fees you didn't notice.
2. You can't read your own statement
If your statement is a wall of line items you don't understand, that's by design. A transparent processor makes it clear what you're paying and why.
3. You're leasing equipment you barely use
Equipment leases can lock you into years of payments for hardware that's outdated or unnecessary. If you're paying a monthly lease, check whether buying or a modern POS-included setup would cost less.
4. Your POS and processor don't talk to each other
When your POS and payment processing are separate, you deal with two vendors and two support calls. An integrated setup simplifies everything — one system, one contact.
5. You haven't looked at it in years
Processing has changed a lot. If you set up your account years ago and never revisited it, you're probably missing efficiency. A quick review costs nothing and often surfaces real savings.
A review isn't a sales pitch in a trench coat — it's just somebody who knows this stuff looking at your setup and telling you the truth. Request a merchant services review and I'll give you an honest read. If you're in good shape, I'll tell you. If you're not, we'll talk about it.
Look, you've read this far — so let's skip the small talk.
If any of this hit a little too close to home, that's a sign it's time to do something about it. We're local, we've run restaurants, and I'd love to help you sort yours out — no jargon, no pressure, just an honest read from somebody who's been behind the line.
