User-Generated Content: Let Your Guests Do the Marketing for You

The most trusted restaurant marketing is the kind your customers create for free. Here's how to get more of it.

Here's a secret the marketing agencies won't tell you: your best content creator is already in your dining room, holding a phone. User-generated content — photos and videos your guests post about your restaurant — is the most trusted, most authentic, and cheapest marketing you'll ever get. I've watched a single guest post fill a Friday night. Here's how to make it happen more often.

Why UGC outperforms your own posts

People trust other people more than they trust brands — it's that simple. Deloitte found that 83% of consumers view creators and the people they follow as trusted sources, and one in three have discovered a brand through someone else's post in the past year. A real guest's photo of your burger carries more weight than your polished ad of the same burger. Always has, always will.

    Make your restaurant worth photographing

Guests post what looks good. Beautiful plating, good lighting, a signature dish, a fun cocktail — these are the things that end up on Instagram. You don't need to redesign your dining room, but you do need to think about what's 'grammable. A dish that photographs well is a dish that markets itself.

    Ask for it — gently

A small table tent or a line on the menu — 'Tag us @yourrestaurant to be featured' — is all it takes to turn happy guests into content creators. Most people are happy to tag; they just don't think about it unless you remind them. Make it easy and make it visible.

    Reshare and credit

When a guest tags you, reshare it to your Stories or feed with credit. It flatters the guest, it shows real people enjoying your food, and it encourages others to post too — because they see you actually feature people. It's a flywheel: the more you reshare, the more people post.

    Run a simple photo contest

Once a quarter, run a 'tag us to win' contest — best photo of our signature dish wins a gift card. It costs you almost nothing and generates a wave of content and engagement. The key is to actually feature the winners so people see it's real.

    Use UGC in your ads

The best-performing restaurant ads often aren't slick productions — they're real guest content. With permission, a genuine guest photo or clip in a small local ad can outperform a studio shoot, because it stops the scroll with authenticity. Real beats polished, especially on social.

Your guests are already your best marketers — you just have to give them a reason and a nudge. I help restaurants build user-generated content into a real marketing engine, backed by View 360 Marketing. Schedule a consultation and let's get your guests posting.

Look, you've read this far — so let's skip the small talk.

If any of this hit a little too close to home, that's a sign it's time to do something about it. We're local, we've run restaurants, and I'd love to help you sort yours out — no jargon, no pressure, just an honest read from somebody who's been behind the line.
